The impressionistic landscapes of Carl Brennir (1850-1920), are immediately recognizable. As a young man he studied art at both the Academy of Lancaster as well as the British Institute in London. He lived most of his life, however, in Nottinghamshire and was elected a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1908. Exhibition records show that he was a regular contributor to the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, where 74 of his paintings were offered. Brennir also exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists, the Manchester City Art Gallery, Birmingham’s Society of Artists, and the South Kensington Fine Art Society. His works often show a vastness to the sky and to the landscape below. He seemed to prefer a broader view to his scenes. In this stunning and elegant sunset scene, he has captured both the beauty of the setting sun as well as a quiet moment in the lives of his figures. The figures were probably more likely placed there more for scale that for us to closely examine. Just as the artist hints at the horizon beyond the tree line, he hints at the activities of the people he has placed in his unfolding quiet drama. He added some resting sheep to enhance the appeal of this rural landscape.
The sky is brilliantly painted, full of all the colors we enjoy seeing at this time of day. The luminous clouds help define Brennir’s vision of sky and land. The painting is fully signed in the lower right corner.
This beautiful sunset scene is housed in its wonderfully decorated and detailed original frame, complete with a wide gilt slip.
I have had both the painting and the frame professionally cleaned and restored. They are now in ready-to-hang condition.
It measures 29-1/2 inches wide by 21-1/2 inches high, including the frame.
