Description
19th century, probably Peruvian, depicting the crucifixion, centering sculptural cross wrapped in green wool thread, entwined with the Veil of Veronica and painted plaster head of Christ, and INRI banner, flanked by painted paper sun and moon, over the mourning Virgin Mary, with hand-painted fabric face, paper hands and tin diadem, her embroidered silk robe blends into the black velvet ground, the whole embroidered and embellished with gilt thread stumpwork implements of the crucifixion, surrounded by tin stars and foliage, the bottom with gilt thread fringe, mounted and framed, banner 54 in. H., 34 3/4 in. W., overall 59 1/2 in. H, 39 1/2 in. W.
Condition
Wear consistent with age, use and exposure to elements; black velvet in overall good condition, some pulled threads throughout, gilt thread has faded over time, some fading and soiling on Mary's cream robe, painted fabric and paper have creases and minor losses, missing tin cutouts throughout, two tin stars have detached
