Item Details
Description
This is an excellent tobacco pipe bag showing both beadwork and quillwork attributed to the Sioux Native American Indians of the Pine Ridge Reservation. The bag shows an Indian tanned hide construction with a sinew sewn high quality craftsmanship. The bag shows an extraordinary beaded and quilled traditional geometric design on both the front and reverse of the bag. The beadwork is done in glass trade seed beads showing a semi-transparent greasy yellow background with sky padre blue, semi-transparent rose, semi-transparent dark blue geometric pattern and is framed in a fancy beaded border and top edge in semi-transparent greasy yellow, semi-transparent dark blue, and medium green. The bottom long hand cut fringe shows a four-inch section with exquisite porcupine quill wrapped design (quillwork) in mineral pigment ocher dyes of Cheyenne pink with a natural white porcupine geometric pattern. Below the quillwork shows additional 18 inches of fringe. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation was established in circa 1889 and was previously called the Great Sioux Reservation, Pine Ridge Agency. Pine Ridge is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota and is home to the Oglala Lakota Sioux. The bag shows overall good condition with little wear or loss to beadwork. Measures overall 42”L x 5.5”W. Truly a wonderful creation done by a resident of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota during the 20th Century.
