African Tribal SALAMPASU Kasangu War mask.
Second half of the 20th Century.
SALAMPASU. Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Wood, black and white kaolin, straw, wicker cane and sysal.
Height 24 cm. + 9 cm. wicker
Width 28 cm.
Depth 26 cm.
Among the mask types of the Salampasu, in the South of the Congo, the ‘kasungu masks’ have a special meaning: they may only been worn by warriors who have murdered an enemy in war. The masked dancer would pull this over his head and fasten the mask in front of his face.
