World chart with discoveries of James Cook 1787

Lot 0388 Details

Description
Heading:
Author: Faden, William
Title: A New General Chart of the World, Exhibiting the Whole of the Discoveries made by the late Captain James Cook, F.R.S. with the Tracks of the Ships under his Command: Also those of Capn. Phipps (now Lord Mulgrave) in his Expedition to the North Pole
Place Published: London
Publisher:
Date Published: 1787
Description:

Copper-engraved map, hand-colored. 41.5x56 cm (16¼x22").

World chart mapping James Cook's three voyages through the South Seas and the Pacific, delineating many of the area's previously unknown coastlines, though it is interesting that much of North America's west coast remained unknown. The chart on Mercator's projection also plots the tracks of Phipps' voyage to the North Pole reaching north of Spitsbergen. This is the scarce first edition, the chart is more commonly seen in its reissue, some 30 years later, by James Wyld who succeeded to William Faden's business. A fascinating sheet with the poignant inscription in the mid-Pacific, "OWhyhee where Capt. Cook was Kill'd".  Provenance: H. Lawrence Wilsey of Pebble Beach, California.

Condition
Mat-burn and offset from tape in the wide margins, away from the neat lines; very good, printed on thick paper.
