The Peru map from the enlarged Cloppenburgh edition of the Mercator/Hondius Atlas Minor features a dramatic compass rose and an elegant title cartouche.
Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was a cartographer renowned for creating a world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines - an innovation that simplified navigation.
