Description
Very unusual late 19th century Japanese set of 20 ceramic theater masks netsuke mounted on wooden board with old silk brocade front and rosewood frame. Excellent modeling, crisp detailing, enamel highlights, slight darkening of protruding parts from wear, very nice patina. each is impressed with seal SEKIHO on the back - the artist is listed in NETSUKE MASKS by Raymond Bushell, p. 176, signatures 258-260. The masks are held by lengths of wire, and can easily be removed from the board if needed. The masks (from upper left) represent the following characters: shojo, 3 versions on Okame, Kentoki, Nasori, Akujo (moving lower jaw), 3 versions of demon mask, Taikofu, Bishamonten, Ko-Omote, Daikoku, Ebisu, Jurojin, Kotokuraku, Hyottoko, Usofuko and another version of Hyottoku. Board size 15 7/8 X 11 3/4 inches. Average netsuke height is about 1 7/8 inches.
