Item Details
Description
Late 19th century ceramic netsuke of tanuki (badger, and a notorious trickster) standing upright and carrying a sake bottle in one hand and a sheaf of paper pages in the other. The top page is marked with a character KAYOI, which translates as ORDER BOOK, so this time tanuki acts as a sake vendor. Nicely modeled piece with serious face and businesslike posture, large testicles, beautiful fur texture. Brown glaze perfectly imitating fur color, wonderful patina. Signed WAHEI in ink on the bottom - this ceramic artist is listed in NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 1210. Height 2 9/16 inches.
