This is a lovely pair of sterling silver nut dishes, made by Hector Aguilar in Mexico in the 1940s. They are wrought in a figural leaf shape with a long "stem" that is twisted into a convenient loop for hooking one's finger through to carry the dish around. The leaves have a romantic modernist look, a naturalistic curling silver maple leaf. The most exquisite detail is found on the stem of the leaf itself, which curls around the base of the dish to give it height while slightly elevating the form with grace and balance. They are made of especially heavy solid silver and are in excellent condition.

Each measures 5 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1". Their combined weight is 229 grams, or 7.36 Troy ounces. They are each marked "TAXCO," with the Aguilar maker's mark, and "940." Hector Aguilar (1905-1986) began working for the famous William Spratling in 1936 and left to start his own workshop in 1939.
