Hand drawn book of castles, 1627: [HAND DRAWN, HANDCOLORED MAP AND VIEWS OF AUSTRIAN/ITALIAN HILL FORTS]. No Title. Milano , 1627. Large quarto. 12x10 inches. 15 leaves including front and rear endpapers. A handcrafted gift book presented to the Archduke Leopold of Austria by Gio' Paolo de Capitani, Archit Militare. The entire book is hand lettered, drawn and colored. The contents: A full-page coat of arms, presumably Leopold's, drawn within a decorative border; A full-page letter from de Capitani presenting the volume to Leopold; A full-page list of the illustrations with a key to their coloring scheme; A folding double page hand-colored map of the region in Northern Italy; Nine full-page handcolored drawings depicting the fortified hill towns. A unique and exceptionally well-executed work with the hand drawn map and lovely views of Chiavenna, Lago di Chiavenna, Dagio, Traona, Sondrio, Tirano, Grosso, Chiapino and Bormio. Bound in contemporary full morocco elaborately ruled and decorated in gilt on upper and lower covers and the spine. Light chipping to spinal extremities, old paper label at foot of spine, corners bumped, most leaves soiled at margins affecting little text or illustration, two of the eleven views called for in the table of contents are missing.
