Late Roman Empire / Early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A wonderful selection of early Byzantine mold-made terracotta oil lamps, each with its own unique form. First is an orange-hued round-bodied lamp with a stable base and visible planta pedis (maker's mark), rounded shoulders with repeating curvilinear designs, a protruding neck channel, and a small fill hole and wick spout. Second is a cream-hued Samarian lamp with a circular base, large triangular handle, and raised triangular and dot motifs. Third is a cream-hued lamp with a raised circular base, tab-shaped thumb rest, a large fill hole, a cross design inside the neck channel, and a squared-off wick spout. Last is an orange-hued lamp with a saucer-shaped body, tab-shaped thumb rest, and an eye-shaped fill hole. A wonderful ensemble for any discerning collection! Size of largest: 3.75" L x 2.875" W x 1.25" H (9.5 cm x 7.3 cm x 3.2 cm).
