Lot of 2 Miniature Greek Xenon Pottery Vessels
Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Greek colonies, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A delightful pair of miniature wheel-thrown pottery vessels, both with salmon and orange-red designs over a rich black glaze. The first vessel is a kylix with a small footed base, wide bowl, shallow bowl cavity, and twin horizontal applied handles, with repeating wave-form and linear designs; the second vessel is a pitcher with a flat base, piriform body, flared rim, a single applied handle, and repeating linear designs. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, and the style is distinguished by added red decoration over black glaze. The pitcher of this pair displays both silvery and rainbow iridescence on both the interior and exterior surfaces. A charming group of miniature pottery! Size (kylix): 3.875" W x 1" H (9.8 cm x 2.5 cm); size (pitcher): 1.75" W x 2" H (4.4 cm x 5.1 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
