Description
John Milton. [John Martin, Illustrator and Engraver]. Paradise Lost. London: Septimus Prowett, 1827. Imperial Quarto edition. Two large quarto volumes. Approximately 14 x 10.25 inches. [vi], 228; [iv], 218 pages. Complete with twenty-four mezzotint plates by Martin. Original tissue guards for twenty-three of the plates. Bound with half-titles. Contemporary full red straight-grain morocco, board decoratively ruled and paneled in blind and gilt, with gilt central floral motifs, spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, blue-coated endleaves. Spines just a bit toned, binding worn at joints and edges, some wear and scuffing to boards, rear hinge of volume II starting, light soiling to endleaves. Text and plates foxed.
