Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1831-1846, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied tab handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated on the front with a brushed sweeping floral motif and on the reverse with three foliate designs. Additional foliate decoration under each handle as well as cobalt highlighting the handle terminals. This jar exhibits better contrast than is typically seen on Smith stoneware from Alexandria, VA. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market consignment, which descended in a Virginia family. A large reglued section of two adjacent pieces on reverse, extending from rim to shoulder, including a minor rim chip. Three chips to one handle. One chip to opposite handle. A 1 1/2" chip to underside at edge, adjacent to a smaller base chip. A 2 1/2" chip to side of rim.
