Description
Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze and Horn Mounted Cartel Clock. The shaped waisted and cove case with gilt bronze leaf and berried laurel encadrements, veneered in red horn centering an enameled dial with Latin and Arabic chapter rings, inscribed: E.Gubelin Breitschmid, Lucerne. Fourth Quarter 19th Century. Dimensions 30 x 10 1/4 x 3 inches (76.2 x 26 x 7.6 cm). The renowed firm of Gubelin began in 1854 when Maurice Breitschmid opened a watchmakerís establishment in Lucerne. Eduard Gubelin apprenticed with Breitschmid and in 1886 married Breitschmidís daughter Bertha Sophia. Eduard became Breitschmidís partner and became head of the firm in 1899. In the 1920ís Gubelin established its atelier making all of its own jewelry and watches.
