Item Details
Description
PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER.
Found in Ohio, dated 1836. Unfaded silk thread on cotton ground. Nine highly detailed vignettes worked in a tent stitch similar to Berlin work are arranged in three rows. Five exotic landscapes feature a pyramid, palm trees, ruins and conical roofed hut, two others featuring funerary urns (one includes the date) and the remaining two consist of a tablet with the letter "G" leaning against a tree and the center a floral wreath initialed "C.H.". Above the vignettes are four realistic flowers: phlox, dianthus, rose and a blue multi-petaled flower and a single set of the alphabet. Three of the floral borders are worked in cross-stitch, the bottom one in a tent stitch. Good rich colors on a clean ground. Minor toning. Modern frame. 16"w. 18"d.
