Scarce, augmented second edition. Trousseau, great clinician of the Hôtel-Dieu, made important advances in the treatment of diphtheria, typhoid, scarlet fever and other conditions. In his book he emphasized the value of bedside observation. He supported the doctrine of the specific nature of disease and realized the significance of Pasteur's work on fermentation. In this work Trousseau describes the phenomenon in tetany which now bears his name. This is produced by pressure upon the arm sufficient to stop the circulation; the result is a sudden contraction of the fingers and hand into the so-called 'obstetrical position'. Garrison-Morton 2221 & 4830. Heirs of Hippocrates 1635
