Victorian Bronze Tazza with Floral Motif

Lot 0007 Details

Description
A pretty antique (circa late 1800s) Tazza or Calling Card Receiver. The Tazza is made of pierced bronze and is decorated with a lovely floral motif with Morning Glories and Roses around the perimeter and a Goddess in the center, the feet are hooves. This would have been used either as a centerpiece on a table for receiving calling cards. The custom of exchanging Calling Cards began in France in the early 1800's, it spread throughout Europe, then became popular in the United States. Calling cards were placed in a basket to note a visit so a hostess could return the courtesy. This fine example measures 10 1/2" in diameter x 3 1/2" high. It is in very good overall condition with an excellent patina on the bronze. The Goddesses face is not cast perfectly which is the was she was made, see closeup photo. The Tazza would be perfect in any antique decor.
