Antique Reverse Painted Capitol Building

Lot 0026 Details

Description
  • Item: This beautiful antique 1916 Reverse Painted Capitol Building on Convex Glass with Oval Frame is in very good condition. 3 small places where paint has flaked off but the rest of the paint is adhering nicely with no problems. This painting was done by W. M. Bilski. The painting is marked at the bottom "CAPITOL WASHINGTON, DC" and to the right of that there is the artist signature. These were produced in 1916 as souvenirs for visitors of the capitol. This is the original frame which is gessoed and painted to look like tiger wood, a common practice. The frame had some minor nicks which have been touched up- no major problems with the frame only one small crack shown in photo. The painting itself has 4 areas that have flaked off or bubbled but this does not distract from the beauty and uniqueness of the picture. The colors are still very bright, with blue sky, green leaves, and added metallic gold on the building. The picture has been professionally re-backed. Measurements: 22"L x 16"H framed.
  • Date: 1916
