Description
886. JOSEPH HUME (1777-1855). English physician in India and "radical" politician known as "Adversity Hume," having purchased a seat in the House of Commons in 1812. He was always conscious of the public purse and interested in "peace and reform," successfully backing legislation against the Combination Laws and fighting tirelessly against the practice of flogging in the army, the impressments of sailors and imprisonment for debt. ALS "J. R. Hume," 1½pp, n.p., n.d. To William Somerville in Hanover Square graciously declining a dinner invitation. "...I unfortunately must leave town this evening. I trust on my return from the South I shall be able to avail myself of the opportunity of cultivating more intimately your acquaintance..." Darkly penned and signed. Red wax seal remnants broken but largely intact. Blank verso of integral leaf tipped to mount; else very nice. Est: $100-200
