The first American book on ophthalmology by the first American who restricted his practice solely to diseases of the eye. Frick had studied under George Beer in Vienna. The work consists of four parts: "Ophthalmia" (five chapters); "Diseases which attack the individual textures of the eye" (six chapters); "Diseases of the appendages" (two chapters); and "Diseases which attack the eyeball" (one chapter). The folding plate shows surgical instruments. Garrison-Morton 5844. Rutkow OP1. Cordasco 20-0228. With a presentation from Frick to Dr. William E. Horner on the half title and the small ex libris label of Harvey Cushing on the front pastedown.

Binding worn, old repairs to hinges, bookplate of St. Joseph's Hospital Library (gift of Dr. Horner); foxing throughout; very good.
