Description
STAMPED "J.P. SMITH", ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "1/2" gallon capacity mark, cylindrical form with single incised shoulder ring, collared neck, and squared rim, straight cut-off lines under base. Slip-trailed cobalt upright floral decoration on front, zig-zag band encircling collar, and two additional bands to reverse. Made by the Milburn Pottery, Wilkes St., Alexandria, VA for merchant James P. Smith (1812-1873). 1850-1854. 8" H, 5 1/4" D rim.
Undamaged except for a small chip to inner rim.

Provenance: From the collection of Larry and Janet McGuire, Charlottesville, VA.
Catalogue Note: Since James Smith only operated the Smith family importing business for a short period, pieces bearing his stamp are very difficult to locate.

Undamaged except for a small chip to inner rim.
