Lot 0110B Details
Description
Russia, 19th century CE. A long tradition exists in Russia of the pious carrying portable icons with them as they travel. This is one such icon. Made of brass in four panels providing an extensive narrative of the life of Jesus Christ. The far left panel shows at the top the crucifixion, overseen by angels and God the Father. Below, clockwise, is the Annunciation; birth of Jesus; presentation of Jesus in the temple; and scenes from the life of the Holy family. The next panel depicts Christ joining His Father in heaven on the upper section, with Jesus in the temple; His baptism by St. John; entrance into Jerusalem and His glorification in heaven. Installation of the Holy Cross is the theme of the following panel on the upper portion; below which shows Christ greeting His disciples after the resurrection; Christ's glorification surrounded by angels; death of the Virgin Mary; and the descent of the Holy Ghost to the enthroned Virgin Mary. Mary is the central theme on the last panel representing her enthronement in heaven; below which shows an icon of the Virgin holding the infant Jesus with Saints Alexander and Cyril; King Vasiley presents himself in the next panel; followed by Saints Antony and Alexey; and then Saints Antony and Theodosius, Abbot of the Monastery of the Caves of Kiev. Not only beautifully done, but also spiritually rewarding. Size: 16" W x 6.25" H (40.6 cm x 15.9 cm)
