Description
West Africa, Yoruba Culture, Nigeria, Gelede, ca. 1940 to 1950 CE. A meticulously carved and hand painted wooden headdress, with a figural bust and intricately incised hair of a multi-lobed, serpentine form to one side, the head emerging from a conical neck that would have been attached to a headdress. The face is decorated with stylized scarifications on each cheek, and presents large almond-shaped open eyes, heavy lids, full gently smiling lips, relatively naturalistic ears, and a rounded forehead. Additional red pigment covered areas on face and neck as well as black pigment on that impressively carved coiffure. A stunning piece of African visual culture with nice patina! Wood block stand. Size: 7.25" W x 8.75" H (18.4 cm x 22.2 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm)on stand
