Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, ovoid-bodied pitcher with tooled rim, the surface covered in a light-colored slip and decorated with two spotted tulips in the John Bell style, flanking a four-petaled blossom. Cobalt swag decoration emanating from the base of the handle. Cobalt foliate motif to handle and cobalt swags to collar. Impressed on collar with John Bell maker's mark above a one-gallon capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in Waynesboro, PA family. Numerous thin cracks emanating from base, stopping at pitcher's midsection. H 10 3/4".
