Description
AKAN FEMALE FIGURE SEATED ON A STOOL. Sitting bolt upright on a typical large four-legged Akan stool with central post and curved seat, youthful female body with groove under knees, arms held out and flexed, right hand holding a globular object, thick columnar neck supporting head with broad forehead, facial features gnawed away; remains of sacrificial material encrusted at back of the shoulders, stool once painted black. Probably from a shrine where it was applied with various sacrificial substances attractive to rodents. Ghana. Mid-20th century. 18 3/4 x 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. Most of surface gnawed by rodent teeth, large crack up center of torso, large crack back of head, erosion at back right of stool and a large chunk missing from back center of stool.
