With large map of the U.S. 1868
Item Details
Description
Heading:
Author: Wilson, Jos. S.
Title: Report of the Commissioner of General Land Office for the Year 1868
Place Published: Washington
Publisher:Government Printing Office
Date Published: 1868
Description:

[4], 421 pp. Large folding hand-colored lithographed map. (8vo) 22.5x14 cm (9x5½"), cloth.

Report notable for the large and detailed map of the United States just after the Civil War, with color key to mineral deposits, and many other features. The map measures 71.2x140.8 cm. Warren Heckrotte notes that "Goetzman, p.539 states that Powell used the 1868 edition of Gorlinski's map in his exploration of the Colorado River. The map shows a small chunk of land labeled Dakota bounded by Idaho, Montana and Wyoming - this was left to Dakota territory when Wyoming was established out of a portion of Dakota territory. This small chunk was transferred to Montana in 1873. I haven't noticed this chunk of land on other maps." He further notes that "There are in pp. 220- 255 two reports by F.V. Hayden: 1) On the Geography of the Missouri Valley. 2) Geological Explorations in Wyoming Territory"

Condition
Staining and some wear to covers; map with some short splits at fold intersections; overall very good.
