Description
RARE AND IMPORTANT 1809 DANIEL WIESSLER, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA GEBURTSCHEIN / BIRTH FRAKTUR BY JACOB CROP(TH), watercolor and ink on paper, imagery including two parrots perched on a floral vine featuring a central tulip and star flowers, all surrounding the central reserve inscribed in German. Unframed. 1809. 7 3/4" x 12 1/4".
Very good overall condition. Professional conservation (including flattening, treatment of small loss at top edge and separation at center with associated inpainting) completed by Maria Pukownik, Ortanna, PA. A full conservation report accompanies lot.
Published: Paul - Bernhart & Company: Shenandoah Valley Folk Art Fraktur (1774-1850), p. 66.
Exhibited: Same, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, June 1, 2011 to January 21, 2012.
Provenance: Property of a Shenandoah Valley private collector.
Acquired from the Bible of a Rockingham Co. family in the 1980s.
Catalogue Note: Daniel Wiessler (Whisler) (1785-1848) was born to Henry Wiessler and Anna Schwartz Wiessler in Rockingham Co. He is buried at the Early Cemetery in Pleasant Valley, VA.
This is one of five recorded fraktur by J. G. Crop(th), only two of which are signed by the artist. Two for the Euler family of Rockingham Co. (still held by the family), one of which is signed; one for Helehna Henkel of New Market, Shenandoah Co. (Free Library of Phila. Collection), daughter of Solomon Henkel; and one for Anna Rothgeb of present-day Page Co. (unknown owner), wife of the fraktur artist Jacob Strickler. The first three examples are illustrated in Bernhart & Company: Shenandoah Valley Folk Art Fraktur (1774-1850), pp. 64-67. The Rothgeb example is included in Folk & Decorative Art of the Shenandoah Valley, p. 81 and back cover.
Information about J. G. Crop(th) has been elusive to this point. He is not recorded in Earnest - Papers For Birth Dayes.
