TOULOUSE-LAUTREC 1864-1901 “La Chaine Simpson” 1896 Paris Chaix 15.6X11 in/39x28 cm This is an original lithograph poster ‘maitre de l’affiche’ (master of the poster) for La Chaine Simpson (the bicycle chain by Simpson sold in France by L.B. Spoke Paris Chaix 31.5x46.5 in /80x118 cm. Mint condition. Toulouse-Lautrec’s work was chosen to be among the first 4 posters in the Maitre de L’Affiche series, which showed how early he had achieved tremendous popular status Les Maitres de L’Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) is One (1) of the most prestigious and influential art publications in history. It’s 256 color plates have preserved for each succeeding generation a wide-ranging selection of outstanding posters from the turn of the century, when that popular art form had reached its first peak. ‘Although Lautrec produced only thirty posters, he is undisputably the master of the poster. For sheer mastery of the color lithographic skills, for his clear understanding of the different needs of poster from painting; for the brilliance of his colors, the uses of contrasts, the fine sense of composition ; for the strong, sometimes compassionate, and always compelling rendering of his subjects- for all these and more, we owe him the title of master of the medium.’
