Engraved map, hand-colored. 84.5x143,5 cm (33 ¼x56½"), mounted on linen backing, sectioned for folding; 2 panels with mounted text on verso of map listing Stanford maps for sale; publisher's original cloth slipcase with paper label, marbled paper chemise.



Excellent example of this large, detailed, and quite uncommon map of the United States at the start of the Civil War. The borders between Oregon and Washington are in pre-Oregon statehood (1859) configuration; Arizona is shown as the southern half of what is now New Mexico and Arizona; Nebraska encompasses present Montana, and Wyoming; etc. OCLC/WorldCat lists only three copies, at the University of Utah, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and the University of Toronto.
