Date Published: [No date, c.1847]
Description:

Lithographed jigsaw puzzle map on thick cardboard, hand-colored. 22x27 cm. (8½x10½").

Map of the United States in the form of a jigsaw puzzle, with Texas an independent country, California still part of Mexico, the northwestern border with Canada with notation of 1846 treaty. Accompanied by original paper key map, hand-colored (with tape repairs). Warren Heckrotte supplies discerning comment relative to the puzzle map and its dating: "The boundary line of 49° agreed to in 1846 shown. Shows the line at 38° proposed by the United States in 1835. The color of Oregon is shown in several places extending beyond 49° including Vancouver Island. Texas is shown including all the Rio Grande. Upper California remains part of Mexico. This is an early U.S. produced jigsaw puzzle map. Rare. The edge pieces interlock; the interior pieces do not."

Provenance: PBA, 11/18/10
Condition
Some darkening and brown, fox-like spots, scuff to title affecting the "ON" in OREGON, small nick to piece of Upper California; very good.
