Catalogue Note: William Henry Mouzon II (1741-1807) was an important engineer, cartographer, and Revolutionary War patriot. He served with distinction in Francis Marion's brigade during the war and saw action at the Battle of Black Mingo. Of French Huguenot ancestry, Mouzon was born on a plantation in present-day Williamsburg County, South Carolina, and educated in France at the Sorbonne. One of the finest surveyors of his time, Mouzon was commissioned in 1771 to begin preparing a new detailed map of South Carolina. What followed after several years was the present map, which now included North Carolina. Published in 1775 by Sayer and Bennett in London, Mouzon's map vastly exceeded all others in its scope and detail. It was used extensively by both sides during the Revolutionary War, and, in fact, George Washington's copy is preserved today at the American Geographical Society Library. A landmark map with exceptional detail, the present example is noteworthy for its fine condition and strong coloration.
Condition
Overall fine condition. Slightly trimmed margins, and minor areas of restoration near center folds. Very light overall toning and minor scattered foxing/staining.
