EMANUEL SUTER, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE MONEY BANK, lead-glazed with splashes of manganese iron oxide, jug-form with a cut-out coin slot below a button-like finial, strap handle. Emanuel Suter (1833-1902), New Erection Pottery (1866-1890), west of Harrisonburg, VA. Circa 1870-1890. 5" H, 2 1/2" D base.
Literature: Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware, p. 97, fig. 187, and Kaufman - Heatwole and Suter Pottery, p. 24, color pl. VIII, and p. 41, figs. 67, 67A.
Provenance: Collection of Maxine and the late Carlton Rinaca, Shenandoah, VA.
Catalogue Note: According to tradition, Suter produced these banks for use in local Sunday schools. Several examples are known that have descended directly in the Suter family and bear ownership signatures under the bases.
Condition
Handle and small chip to rear of finial restored. Otherwise undamaged.
