STAMPED "E. SUTER (SMALL STAR)" ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE LOVE FEAST BOWL, lead-glazed interior, low conical form with squared rim and pronounced foot. Emanuel Suter (1833-1902), New Erection Pottery (1866-1890), west of Harrisonburg, VA. Circa 1870-1890. 3 1/2" H, 10 1/4" D rim.
Literature: See Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware, p. 84, fig. 151 and Comstock - Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 337, fig. 6.56 for identical examples.
Provenance: Collection of Maxine and the late Carlton Rinaca, Shenandoah, VA.
Catalogue Note: This is the second style of bowl produced by Suter for numerous Rockingham Co. Church of the Brethren congregations. Tradition indicates the bowls were used to serve the traditional "Love Feast" soup.
Condition
Undamaged except for a shallow chip to inner rim, wear to interior and rim resulting in glaze loss.
