EMANUEL SUTER, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF
Item Details
Description
EMANUEL SUTER, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE MUG, running manganese and lead glazed, cylindrical can form with applied molded handle, turning rings to interior bottom and underside of the flat base. Emanuel Suter (1833-1902), New Erection Pottery (1866-1890), west of Harrisonburg, VA. Circa 1860-1890. 3 3/8" H, 3" D rim.
Literature: Published Kaufman - Heatwole and Suter Pottery, p. 40, fig. 64. Glaze parallels Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthenware, front cover and p. 72, fig. 114.
Provenance: Property of David Suter._x000D_
From his aunt Miss Mary Frances Suter (1924-1991). _x000D_
From her father David Irenaeus Suter (1870-1930). _x000D_
From his parents Emanuel and Elizabeth Suter.
Catalogue Note: Family tradition passed from Miss Frances Suter indicates that this and the following mug were made during the Civil War by Emanuel Suter in response to the unavailability of china from Europe as a consequence of the Federal embargo. In her Suter family history, Memories of Yesteryear (p. 42), Mary Eugenia Suter notes "During the war between the states Grandfather made dishes for table use, plates, cups, and saucers, and other table necessities." It is very possible that Suter produced these mugs exclusively for his own family use as only three examples have been recorded. _x000D_
This is a very rare glazing technique for Suter. It was likely his variation of the mottled-brown Rockingham glaze popular during this period.
Condition
Undamaged except for a few minute flakes to the inner rim.
