Vidal Aguilar | Pitcher
Item Details
Description
Artist: Vidal Aguilar | Title: Pitcher | Inscribed underside: Ariz 1902 C [indistinct] | Media: Ceramic | Dimensions: 11 by 7 by 7 inches

This vessel is readily attributed to the Aguilar family of Santo Domingo Pueblo. The work of these three women, Felipita Aguilar, Mrs. Ramos Aguilar, and Ascuncion Aguilar Cate, was marketed by the Bernalillo Mercantile Company beginning in about 1900 and continuing through to 1920. The pitcher is almost identical in form to one illustrated in Batkin, Pottery of the Pueblos of New Mexico 1700 - 1940, page 107, and to one in the collection of the Denver Art Museum. Incorrectly identified on underside as being acquired in Arizona.
