AN OLD BELIEVERS RUSSIAN ICON of the Kazan Mother of God with the Guardian Angel and Saints, circa 1650-1800. The present painted panel dates to circa 1780, and probably was commissioned as a receptacle for the earlier (circa 1650) icon of the Kazan Mother of God which has been inset at top center. The saints are most likely family saints and include St. Peligia, St. Moses the Moor, St. Julian, St. Alexander Nevskiy, St. Barsonophius, St. Guriy, St. Taisia, St. John the Much Suffering, St. Dimitriy, St. Antoni, and St. Feodosiy. The entire image is overlaid with an elaborately engraved silver-gilt riza with shaded enamel haloes, hallmarked Moscow circa 1899-1908 and with Cyrillic maker's mark of Igor Chepyatov. 14.25 inches x 12.25 inches (36.2 cm x 31 cm). Estimate $7,500-$10,000
