Description
American School, 19th century. "Portrait of a Priest", oil on canvas, signed lower right "R. Berteaux". Painting depicts a priest at bust length wearing black drape and white collar with black zucchetto to his head, a slightly downturned chin reveals a stern expression and furrowed brow. Framed approximately 19" x 17", unframed approximately 10" x 8".
Condition
Painting on original canvas and not relined. No signs of rips, tears or holes. Oxidation to back of canvas and stretcher commensurate with age of work. Under black light examination, greenish hue from older varnish coat. Light craquelure however paint layer stable without signs of lifting. Little to no signs of retouches or in-painting.
