Lot 4002 Details

Title: Œuvre de Albert Durer
Publisher: J. Claye (Paris)
Printing Year: c1880

Details/Condition: Bound in its original blindstamped dark navy cloth boards with gilt embossing, this large antique folio is a scarce collection of Durer's work. The folio is not bound (as issued) and includes a four-page biography of Albert Durer followed by 20 pages of catalog descriptions for each of the 107 plates. The plates are all tipped-in to large, heavy card stock sheets and show excellent workmanship. The text sections are in French and are complete, and all the illustrations are present. 108 plates are called for, one sheet contains two of the appendix plates, bring the total number of plate sheets to 107. If there was a title page originally, it is lacking now. The volume shows some external age/wear including spine re-covering. The illustrations are in excellent condition with some scattered marks concentrated on the backing sheets. The text pages are toned and brittle with significant edge wear. Approximately half of the plates have their title written (in English) in pencil next to the red plate number on the mounting sheet. There is a library bookplate on the front endpaper and the mounting sheets have a hand-written six-digit number written at the bottom of the back side (a few have it on the front side). This was not part of general circulation and bears only these light library indications. The book measures approximately 13.25" x 18.75". Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $12.50
