This is a well-preserved, appealing and large antiphonal from a Spanish monastery. The manuscript contains 105 large vellum leaves, bound in a massive monastery binding. Characteristic stenciled manuscript.

The old hand-written title on a preliminary leaf: 'Este Libro que contiene Ymvitatorios Antifonas y Responsos del tercer Noctorno le hizo Fray. Fernando Fabreqas para el Monasterio de San Pedro de las (B?) or (D?)uenas Ano de 1600. Siendo Abadesa D.na Maria Benita Fernandez”. The entry was written by the abbess Benita Maria Fernandez from the convent San Pedro des Buenas (or Duenas).

An antiphonary, or antiphonal, is a liturgical book for the hourly prayers of the Roman Catholic Church. It contains the melodies and lyrics of all choral singing of the Divine. The often large-format antiphonaries were placed on mighty stands in the churches that were especially made for this purpose. This way, this liturgy served all choristers as a template, once texts or tunes did not come to mind immediately.

Illustrations:

Original textura in black and red ink. Hundreds of large red initials. Each page with six staves in red over five lines with medieval notations in black ink, also characteristic of Gregorian chants. With text in black ink below. Dimensions of leaves: 53 x 40 cm. Text area: 44 x 30 cm.

Collation:

1 fly leaf with title as mentioned above. Title and register of 'In festo' and 'Invitatoria', mentioning leaves 1-93, however, actual pagination 1-109. 105 (of 109) leaves with writing on both sides. Leaves 34, 35, 82 and 97 presumably removed through censor (?). Leaves 108/109 with later entries, presumably 18th century.

Condition:

In good and genuine condition. Vellum leaves browned and wavy in places. Margins partially finger stained and with fine aging patina. Vellum and text slightly rubbed in places.

Binding:

Monumental, splendid original Renaissance binding. Thick calfskin over massive wooden boards with some gilt-tooled floral patterns. Four strong raised bands. Some page markers. Ten massive ornamental brass corner and center fittings. Fittings in edges with thick thorns for the protection of the book's edges. Iron clasps, hoop missing. Good original condition with stronger traces of use. Covers scuffed and rubbed. Spine with stronger blemishes. Binding and book block firm and stable. Imperial folio: 60 x 42 x 11.5 cm. Weight: ca. 12.5 kg.

Provenance:

Abbess Benita Maria Fernandez of monastery San Pedro des Buenas.
