Description
An early Victorian garnet and seed pearl demi-parure, the eight rayed star shaped pendant brooch set to the centre with an oval cut eight claw set garnet within a delicate but elaborately scrolled and pierced detailed mount, in turn within four mounts each set with an oval cut six claw set garnet to the bottom of a single seed pearl in a collet mount with delicate beaded detailing to the perimeter, alternately set with four larger mounts, each set with a pear cut seven claw set garnet to the bottom of a mount of three seed pearls with similar beaded detailing to the perimeter, all set in closed back mounts with brooch pin fitting to the reverse, suspending on an articulated heavy oval bale with engraved detailing, in turn suspending on a heavy snake link chain with bolt ring clasp. Length approximately 26cm. Weight approximately 29.22gms; with a pair of earrings to match, the three seed pearls in collet settings with delicate and elaborate beaded detailing, set to the bottom of a pear cut collet set garnet within a mount of beaded detailing, to the bottom of a further collet set seed pearl within a mount of beaded detailing, all suspending on an articulated link from an oval cut six claw set garnet within a mount of beaded detailing, to the bottom of a shepherds hook fitting. All in fitted box. Length approx 4.5cm. Total weight approximately 10.09gms. Provenance: Reputedly the property of Alice Keppel, mistress of Edward VII Condition report The garnets measure from 12mm x 8mm to 7mm x 6mm in the necklace and from 12mm x 7mm to 7mm to 6mm in the earrings. The garnets are a well matched mid to dark red in colour with good colour saturation to most, a few with some small areas of zoning. The majority with natural dark inclusions but none reaching the surface. Good surface condition to most with only very slight surface marks in keeping with general wear, and only very minor chips to some of the facet edges. The seed pearls in the necklace are light to mid cream with some grey overtones. The seed pearls in the earrings are light to mid cream/grey . All have little lustre with numerous natural surface marks and abrasions, most appear to be slightly misshapen. The mounts in general in good condition with only very minor wear to the edges and to the reverse some very small dents and knocks. One of the smaller mounts shows some repair, particularly as it is slightly misshapen. Overall in good condition with minimal signs of damage or wear.
