Wall Map of U.S. 1847
Item Details
Description
Heading: (United States)
Author: Munson, S. Bishop
Title: A Map of the United States
Place Published: Cincinnati, Ohio
Publisher:S. Bishop Munson
Date Published: 1847
Description:

Wall map on rollers. 90x110 cm. (35½x46¾ ") including wide border with vignettes, states seals and portraits of Presidents.

Rare wall map of the United States just after the Mexican War, with Texas joined to the Union, but California and the Southwest still shown as a part of Mexico in the large inset of the western portion of the continent in lower right. There are no copies of this 1847 Munson wall map listed in OCLC/WorldCat, though there are two copies of the similar 1845 issue with a more lengthy title and the publisher listed as Doolittle, Munson & Sherer. The most notable difference between the two maps is the presence in the 1847 map of the large inset of the the West, with much detail in California including Baja - the 1845 map had only a small inset of Oregon with just a portion of northern California. The vignette views in the border include St Louis, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, New Orleans, and apparently Nashville. The portraits are of the first eleven presidents, George Washington through James K. Polk, and there are thirty state seals.

Condition
Somewhat darkened, minor rubbing and some edge wear, horizontal crease causing cracking in the surface; a few repairs, rollers neatly reattached; about very good.
