Description
YORUBA HEADDRESS FOR THE GELEDE FESTIVAL. Carved wood with black, dark red, and white pigments. Bearded male head with snake coiled on top. Facial features set in an amiable expression, large protruding lips above rounded goatee, wide open crescentic eyes pierced at center, scarification marks on cheeks and forehead, arched eyebrows. The head shaved but with a large grooved tress pulled down on the left with a loop at bottom, three grooved cylinders with small caps at back of head. The coiled snake with a diamond design on its back in alternating dark red and black colors. Flaring base pierced all around for attachment of costume. Nigeria. Probably created in the middle part of the 20th century. Height = 10 inches; Width = 10 inches; Depth = 11 inches Provenance: The John & Monica Haley collection, Richmond, California. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and origin; erosion to the base from front to left side and back, erosion at top center. Snake head repaired. A few scrapes and nicks here and there.
