Item Details
Description
Second half 19th century, 375 x 325 cm, South Eastern Europe, Thrace
This large, red-ground single-panel kilim was woven in Thrace, which was still part of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century but is now Bulgarian territory. Produced in rural homes and small workshops, kilims of this kind vary rather widely in design; this example shows five stepped polygons linked by stylised trees and diagonal twigs. The main border is filled with the abstract animals that are typical of Sarkoy. Common features shared by these kilims are their palette, with a dominant cherry red, blues, green and yellow, and their specific weaving technique including eccentric wefts. - Slight signs of wear, good overall condition.
