FINE SIGNED AND INSCRIBED LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA FOLK ART

Lot 0397 Details

Description
FINE SIGNED AND INSCRIBED LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA FOLK ART THEOREM PAINTING, watercolor and ink on paper, a vibrant example featuring stenciled floral elements, signed and inscribed "Mrs. Dome’s Picture / Presented by her niece / Mary A. Slagle / Lynchburg, Va" at bottom right. Housed under glass in a period paint-decorated pine frame. Circa 1855-1860. 9 3/4" x 7 3/4" sight, 12 3/4" x 10 3/4" OA.

Catalogue Note: Mary A. Slagle was born in 1846 in the Castle Craig area of Campbell Co., VA. Nothing is known at this time about the "Mrs. Dome" mentioned in the inscription, but it is possible that this work was executed in association with an early female educational institution, several of which operated in Lynchburg at the time.
Condition
Very good condition with light fold lines to paper and small tear to lower right corner. Not examined out of frame.
