Description
RARE ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED POPLAR AND YELLOW PINE ONE-DRAWER STAND TABLE, the rectangular top above a distinctive shaped turkey-breast drawer front set with original brass knob, and raised on finely tapered square legs. Outstanding dry original red-and-black-painted decoration. Discovered in a house south of Fulks Run, Rockingham Co., VA. Circa 1830. 27" H, 24" x 18 3/4" top.

Literature: See SVFS - Folk and Decorative Art of the Shenandoah Valley, p. 1, fig. 100 for an example from the same shop.

Provenance: Collection of the late John and Lil Palmer, Purcellville, VA.
Ex-collection of Kurt and Linda Russ, Rockbridge Co., VA.
Ex-collection of Dolly and Mac McKenney, Mint Spring, VA.
Purchased from Burt Long Antiques, New Market, VA.

Catalogue Note: This is the third known stand attributed to a yet to be identified cabinet shop in the Fulks Run/Brocks Gap area of western Rockingham Co. Each has a history of ownership in the area, is constructed of poplar and yellow pine, features a distinctively shaped drawer front, and retains identical similar painted decoration.
The forthcoming exhibition and publication on food safes of the Shenandoah Valley by Kurt Russ and Jeffrey Evans will identify a group of safes from the same area that feature turkey-breast drawers and are thought to be from the same shop as the stands.
Condition
Excellent original condition with expected wear and light marring to painted surface.
