Description
FINE AND RARE THOMPSON POTTERY, MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA FOLK-ART-DECORATED STONEWARE DIMINUTIVE CANNING JAR, salt-glazed, approximately one-quart capacity, shouldered cylindrical form with a flared neck and nearly-flat rim. Albany-slip glazed interior. Brushed cobalt decoration of a seated squirrel eating a nut below an arch device. Attributed to the Thompson Pottery (active c. 1810-1890), Morgantown, WV. Circa 1860-1870. 7 3/4" H, 3 1/2" D rim.

Provenance: Collection of the late John and Lil Palmer, Purcellville, VA.
Purchased by Lil Palmer at the Hillsville, VA Antiques Market in the mid-1980s.

Catalogue Note: The Thompson Pottery is well known for producing a sizable number of "people pots" featuring folk-art depictions of male and/or female figures engaged in a variety of activities. The firm is also credited with producing a limited number of vessels featuring stylized renditions of animals, birds, and fish including a stag beneath a tree and a large whale. This squirrel seen on this jar seems to be unique.
