A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE THIRD FINDING OF THE HEAD OF JOHN THE FORERUNNER, CIRCA 1890, PROBABLY PALEKH. At center, a monk and his assistant uncovering the head of John the Forerunner within a cave, and the city walls of Emesia are shown in the distance. At top center, Christ delivers a blessing from atop characteristic Palekh style clouds, and the gilt background and borders ornately incised with cross forms and strapwork. The borders displaying Saints Timothy, Evdokia, and Saints Constantine and Helen. 13.75 inches x 12 inches (35 x 30.7 cm).
