Description
JEAN CARLU (1900-1997). PARIS ARTS ET TECHNIQUES. 1937.
39x24 1/4 inches. Jules Simon, Paris.
Condition A-: vertical and horizontal folds.
In 1937 a huge international exhibition was held in Paris. It was to be Paris's last World's Fair before the occupation during the Second World War. The central building of the fair was designed by Carlu's brother Jacques, and Jean Carlu himself was put in charge of the pavilion of advertising and publicity (the first time such a pavilion had been included at a world's fair). Paul Colin, Leonetto Cappiello and Jean Carlu were selected to create posters for the event. Carlu, in a simple and efficient way, depicts a woman's post-cubist profile against a background of flags from all the participating nations. The same image was also used on the brochure for the event. This is the larger, French language format. Carlu 43.
