Description
STAMPED "J.D.HEATWOLE", ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE PITCHER, salt glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity. Extremely rare scrolled-frame name stamp to right of handle. Classic Dry River form featuring a bulbous body with a graceful sloping shoulder, tall neck, beaded rim and lightly-grooved strap handle, incised double rings on neck and shoulder. Brushed cobalt feathered-quatrefoil decoration on front flanked by additional single feathers to sides. John D. Heatwole, Dry River Pottery. 1860-1870. 9 1/4" H, 4 1/2" D rim, 5" D base.

Catalogue Note: This pitcher represents only the second recorded example of pottery bearing Heatwole's scrolled-frame stamp. Its primary service was as an ink stamp used by Heatwole to mark books from his library. Stan Kaufman illustrated an example of this stamp inked into a book from Heatwole's library on page 14 of his exhibition catalogue referenced above.

Excellent condition, a network of hairlines across the base, several of which traverse 1" to 2" up the sides.
